Key Principles/Purpose of Study
Humanities incorporates both Geography and History which are led and planned jointly. Both subjects help children and young people understand similarities and differences between societies and cultures and the impact of changes on people and places. The use of careful research, evidence and fieldwork is crucial in developing good knowledge and understanding.
At Littlegreen School, we want our pupils to develop skills for life through Humanities; to ask questions, find out information, share ideas and understand other people’s feelings and experiences. Humanities are taught through topics in KS2 and lower KS3. In upper KS3 and KS4 humanities are taught in discreet lessons covering a range of topics about both physical and human geography, and ancient and modern history. Lessons are practical and engaging, and can often include handling objects and artefacts, drawing, ICT, taking photographs or making short films, in fact anything that captures the children’s curiosity in both the world around them and the past. To enable our learners to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the different subjects, we link themes within Humanities, and also to core curriculum areas. This helps them to put their learning into context and deepen their understanding of the world they live in. Most importantly, we believe in a creative ‘hands-on’ active approach which sparks enthusiasm and interest.
History provides opportunities for learners to experience and develop some understanding of events and people of different times and places. It enriches the curriculum through exploring of historical eras, handling artefacts, visiting museums, stories, books, photos and through practical craft-like activities linked to particular topics. This builds on natural curiosity of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world.
Overall, we aim to make Humanities both engaging and meaningful.
Aims and Objectives
Learn about the lives and lifestyles of people in the past, including those of significant men, women and children as well as events from the recent and more distant past in our own area, as well as further afield in Britain and across the wider world.
Develop chronological understanding, with the expectation for learners to place events, people and changes into correct periods of time as well as using dates and vocabulary appropriately and with accuracy.
Acquire appropriate knowledge and understanding about the periods and the people of the time, including their characteristic features, social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity and being able to give reasons for, and the results of, the main historical events and changes, while also seeing similarities to modern life. This enables learners to understand not only how the past is different from the present but how and why historical developments have shaped the world and their lives.
Learn to explain and analyse why events took place, and why people acted the way they did.
Provide local visits and field trips as excellent learning opportunities, enabling learners apply their knowledge.
Arouse learners’ interest in their past by gaining an understanding of their country’s origins through an enquiring mind, which enhances their thinking skills.
